7-14 days at 18-21 °C, in media with very low soluble salt levels and pH: 5.2-6.2. Requires light for germination. Cover seed lightly with vermiculite after sowing. Keep soil slightly moist but not wet. Avoid direct sunlight by shading seed after sowing. Temperatures above 21 °C inhibit the germination.

From Stage II* reduce the soil moisture, but the plug should not dry out. Do not let soluble salt level rise above 0,75 EC. Start fertilization at 50-75 ppm nitrogen in a well balanced formula. During Stage III and Stage IV fertilization levels can be increased to 100 ppm.

Day length neutral plants. For growth and flowering Viola needs high light levels. The short day improves the branching and the growth the plants. Avoid direct sunlight by shading at warm temperatures in autumn or in winter. Light deficiency combined with warm temperatures can be a cause for stretching of shoots. Supplemental lighting decreases considerably the cultivation time.

Grow at 10-15 °C or outdoors. Cultivate as cool as possible for a good compact growth. Temperatures above 12 °C are a cause for stretching of shoots. In winter indoors frost free at 3-5 °C or outdoors. Outdoors fleece cover needed. In January the plants start to grow at 8-10 °C. The frost free cultivation in greenhouse is finished 3-4 weeks earlier than cultivation in non-heated greenhouse or outdoors. At warm temperatures open airing in time.

Low fertilization levels are required. Fertilize the crop weekly with 100 ppm nitrogen (at 0 kg/m³ slow release fertilizer in substrate), using a potassium balanced fertilizer (N: K2O-ratio: 1:1,5). The plants take up the minerals at 5 °C. Avoid high ammonium and high nitrogen levels. Fertilize in autumn and in winter with each irrigation (approx. 2-4 per months). In spring fertilize 100 ppm nitrogen of a potassium balanced fertilizer. Prevent magnesium deficiency by applying magnesium sulphate (0,025 %) 1-2 times and in case of iron deficiency apply iron-chelate for 1-2 times. Temperatures below 10 °C inhibit the iron uptake. Therefore take care of, that for iron fertilization the temperature is above 10°C. Avoid nutrition deficiency in spring, because this a cause for high quantities of yellow leaves and very poor plant qualities. The roots are sensitive to high salt levels in substrates (above 1,5 g/l). Avoid high fertilizer concentrations, it is advisable to fertilize several times with low concentrations weekly. Take into consideration that outdoors the nutrition might be washed out due to rainfall.

| Cultural Hints: | |
Transplant in time, because nutrition deficiency in plug stage or later can result in a Viola cultivation that will flower before sufficient foliage has grown to fill the packs or pots. A transplantation in time prevents flower initiation that is early.
