| Sowing Method: | |
1-3 seeds per plug
| Germination: | |
5-10 days at 20-22 °C, in media with very low soluble salt levels and pH: 6.0-7.5. Requires light for germination. Do not cover seed. Keep soil slightly moist but not wet.
Avoid direct sunlight by shading seeds after sowing.
| Plug Culture: | |
From Stage II* reduce the soil moisture, but the plug should not dry out and reduce the temperature to 18 °C. Do not let soluble salt level rise above 0,50 EC. Start fertilization at 50 ppm nitrogen in a well balanced formula. During Stage III and Stage IV fertilization levels can be increased to 100 ppm.
| Growing On: | |
4-6 weeks after sowing transplant 1 plant per plug tray (4x4 cm) and 8-10 weeks later transplant 1 plant into a pot (6-10 cm) and 2-3 plants into a bigger pot (11-15 cm). Two time transplantation will support the young plant quality.
| Media: | |
Use a well-drained, growing perennial substrate with 0-15 % clay, 0-10 % parts (e.g. bark, sand, perlite),1-1,5 kg/m³ complete balanced fertilizer, 1-2 kg/m³ slow release fertilizer (3-9 months), iron-chelate, micronutrients, pH: 6.0-7.5.
| Photoperiod / Light: | |
Long day plants. The long day (14 h) supports the flower initiation and development. The plant's white hairy foliage can pose cultivation problems. This hair formation is depending on UV-radiation. High UV radiation promotes white and dense hairs of the foliage while at low UV radiation the plants stay green and do not form hairs. Therefore it is possible to cultivate the plants outdoors or in tunnel with UV permeable foil. The formation of hairs is very poor in lowland compared to in highland.
| Temperature: | |
Grow at 10-15 °C or outdoors. In winter indoors frost free at 3-5 °C or outdoors. The plants start to grow for 10 weeks at 15-18 °C. Cold temperatures, at 7-12 °C, will increase the cultivation time.
| Fertilization: | |
Low fertilization levels are required. Fertilize the crop weekly with 60-80 ppm nitrogen (at 2 kg/m³ slow release fertilizer in substrate), using a complete balanced fertilizer. Avoid high ammonium and high nitrogen levels. Don't fertilize after mid September. In spring fertilize 60-80 ppm nitrogen of a complete balanced fertilizer. Prevent magnesium deficiency by applying magnesium sulphate (0,05 %) 1-2 times and in case of iron deficiency (above pH 6.0) apply iron-chelate for 1-2 times. The roots are sensitive to high salt levels in substrates. Avoid high fertilizer concentrations, it is advisable to fertilize several times with low concentrations weekly.
| Cultural Hints: | |
Check the pH-value in substrate regularly and avoid that the pH-value in soils is decreased. Do not cultivate the plants too wet or too dry. Leontopodium is protected and it is not allowed to remove it from nature.
Hint
The cultural recommendations are based on results from trials conducted under Central European conditions. Different conditions in other parts of the world may lead to deviations in results achieved.
