TECHNICAL INFORMATION
Life Cycle:  Annual
Familiy, Origin:  Malvaceae, South Europe, North Africa, Syria
Sitelocation:  Full sun
Garden Height:  55 cm
  21,65 inch
Natural flowertime:  July - September
Crop Time:  Plug crop: 4-6 weeks, depending on season; Flowering pots: 8-10 weeks, depending on season; Cut flower production: 12-16 weeks, depending on season
Sell Period:  from April
Seed Form:  Raw Seed
Seed Count:  156 K/g
Sowing Time:  Indoor forcing: at March for pot flower production; Outdoor forcing: at April for outdoor cut flower production
Sowing Method:  3-5 seeds per plug, sowing directly into fields and at intervals is recommended
Germination:  4-6 days at 21-22 °C, in media with low soluble salt levels and pH: 5.5-5.8. Before sowing treat substrate with fungicide against Colletotrichum. Cover seed with vermiculite, sand or substrate after sowing. Keep soil slightly moist but not wet. In the field sowings need to be covered by fleece or foil to avoid them to dry out.
Plug Culture:  From Stage II* reduce the soil moisture, but the plug should not dry out and reduce the temperature to 15-18 °C. Do not let soluble salt level rise above 0,75 EC. Start fertilization at 75 ppm nitrogen in a well balanced formula. During Stage III and Stage IV fertilization levels can be increased to 150-200 ppm.
Growing On:  3-5 weeks after sowing transplant 3 plants into a pot (13-15 cm) or 3-5 plants into a container (3-5 l). For flowering pot production ensure good pot size, to encourage root growth, thus improving plant quality. Plant cut flowers (frost free) in 30-40 x 30-40 cm space.
Media:  Use a well-drained, growing substrate with 15-30 % clay, 1-1,5 kg/m³ complete balanced fertilizer, iron-chelate, micronutrients, pH: 5.5-5.8. Field: well-drained, moderate nutrition supply, humus, sandy loamy soils. Standard fertilization: 80-100 g/m² slow release fertilizer.
Temperature:  Grow at 8-15 °C. Lavatera does not tolerate frost.
Fertilization:  Moderate-high fertilization levels are required. Fertilize the crop weekly with 15-200 ppm nitrogen using a complete balanced fertilizer. Avoid high ammonium and high nitrogen levels. Prevent magnesium deficiency by applying magnesium sulphate (0,05 %) 1-2 times and in case of iron deficiency (above pH 6.0) apply iron-chelate for 1-2 times. Field: N min soil value: approximately 120 g/m².
Cut Flowers:  Cut flower stems can be harvested, when 1-2 flowers per stem are open. Buds, which colour is visible are flowering open in vase. Remove the bottom leaves. Vase life: 12-15 days. Cold storage is not possible.
Cultural Hints:  Cultivate rather dry, because the roots are very sensitive to wet substrates or soils. After planting treat the pots with fungicide against Colletotrichum. Don't produce too close, in order to avoid fungi infection and the plant quality is improving with larger distance between pots.

Hint
The cultural recommendations are based on results from trials conducted under Central European conditions. Different conditions in other parts of the world may lead to deviations in results achieved.
