TECHNICAL INFORMATION
Life Cycle:  Perennial
Familiy, Origin:  Rosaceae, Europe
Sitelocation:  Full sun
Garden Height:  30 cm
  11,81 inch
Crop Time:  Plug crop: 4-6 weeks; Green pots: 10-12 weeks
Seed Form:  Raw Seed
Seed Count:  2597 K/g
Sowing Time:  January-March for green pots
Sowing Method:  2-3 seeds per plug
Germination:  10-14 days at 18-22 °C, in media with low soluble salt levels and pH: 5.2-6.8. Before sowing treat substrate with fungicide. Cover seed with vermiculite, sand or substrate after sowing. Keep soil slightly moist but not wet. The roots are sensitive to wet substrates.
Plug Culture:  From Stage II* reduce the moisture, but the plug should not dry out and reduce the temperature to 18 °C. Do not let soluble salt level rise above 0,75 EC. Start fertilization at 50-75 ppm nitrogen in a well balanced formula. During Stage III and Stage IV fertilization levels can be increased up to 200-300 ppm.
Growing On:  4-6 weeks after sowing transplant 1 plant into a pot (7-10 cm) and 3-4 plants into a hanging basket (20-30 cm). Optimal plant size: 2nd to 3rd leaf stage. Plant plants (frost free) in 25-30 x 30 cm space. A fleece or mulch to cover (e.g. straw) is useful to keep the fruits clean later.
Media:  Use a well-drained, growing substrate with 15-30 % clay, 0-15 % parts (e. g. perlite, sand), 3 kg/m³ complete balanced fertilizer, iron-chelate, micronutrients, pH: 5.2-6.8. Field: loamy sandy to sandy humus soils with good drainage. Standard fertilization: 40-60 g/m2 of a slow release fertilizer.
Photoperiod / Light:  Day length neutral plant. Cultivate as bright as possible. Fragaria is mainly sold as young fruit plants, while the market share for selling plants with flowers is negligible.
Temperature:  Grow at 15-20 °C. The plants for early selling should be hardened.
Fertilization:  High fertilization levels are required. Fertilize the crop weekly with 300-400 ppm nitrogen, using a complete balanced fertilizer. Avoid high ammonium and high nitrogen levels. High nitrogen levels are the cause that the foliage get large. When the flowers are visible, change the fertilizer and use a potassium balanced fertilizer (N: K2O-ratio: 1:1,5). Take care of a good phosphate and iron supply. Prevent magnesium deficiency by applying magnesium sulphate (0,05 %) 1-2 times and in case of iron deficiency apply iron-chelate for 1-2 times. Field: If necessary according to analysis, improve the soil with 100-120 g/m² of a slow release fertilizer, applied in several portions. Old plants have higher nutrition demand than young plants.
Cultural Hints:  Cultivate constantly moist, but avoid wetness in substrate. Water deficiency during cultivation is a cause that the fruit remain too small.

Hint
The cultural recommendations are based on results from trials conducted under Central European conditions. Different conditions in other parts of the world may lead to deviations in results achieved.
