| Sowing Method: | |
1 seed per plug
| Germination: | |
6-8 days at 22-25 °C, in media with very low soluble salt levels and pH: 5.8-6.2. Requires light for germination. Cover seed lightly with vermiculite after sowing. In winter and spring supplemental light (3000-5000 lx) is recommended, in order to avoid that the shoots become too soft. Keep soil slightly moist but not wet. Avoid the substrate to dry out.
| Plug Culture: | |
From Stage II reduce the moisture, but the plug should not dry out. Do not let soluble salt level rise above 0,5 EC. The roots are sensitive to high salt levels in substrates. Start fertilization at 50 ppm nitrogen in a well balanced formula. During Stage III and Stage IV fertilization levels can be increased up to 200-300 ppm.
| Growing On: | |
5-6 weeks after sowing transplant 1 plant into a pot (10-15 cm) or pack and 3-4 plants into a hanging basket (25-30 cm). The first true leaves should just cover the plug and the roots should not be "matted" in the plug.
| Media: | |
Use a well-drained, growing substrate with 15-30 % clay, 0-20 % perlite, 1-1,5 kg/m³ complete balanced fertilizer, iron-chelate, micronutrients, pH: 5.8-6.2.
| Photoperiod / Light: | |
Day length neutral plant. In winter and spring supplemental light (3000-5000 lx) is recommended for the good plant quality. Protect the plants in summer by shading against high sunlight and high light intensity, because the leaves can get sunburned.
| Temperature: | |
Grow at 20-24 °C during daytime and at 18-20 °C during night. For selling harden the plants at 12-15 °C and UV light. At temperatures below 18 °C the vegetative growth is inhibited. Impatiens New Guinea does not tolerate temperatures below 12 °C.
| Fertilization: | |
High fertilization levels are required. Fertilize the crop weekly with 200-300 ppm nitrogen, using a complete balanced fertilizer. 4-5 weeks before selling change the fertilizer and use a potassium balanced fertilizer (N: K2O-ratio: 1:1,5). Avoid high ammonium and high nitrogen levels.
Prevent magnesium deficiency by applying magnesium sulphate (0,025 %) 1-2 times and in case of iron deficiency apply iron-chelate for 1-2 times. Avoid high salt levels in substrate. Avoid high fertilizer concentrations (use concentration below 0,11 %), it is advisable to fertilize several times with low concentrations weekly.

| Cultural Hints: | |
New Guinea impatiens from seeds need a good nutrition. A pinching of the tops is not required and increase unnecessarily the cultivation time. Avoid drought stress and overwatering.
Hint
The cultural recommendations are based on results from trials conducted under Central European conditions. Different conditions in other parts of the world may lead to deviations in results achieved.
