L8750 - ERYNGIUM PLANUM, FLAT SEA HOLLY
'Blue Hobbit'
Aptly named for its unique color and stature, Eryngium 'Blue Hobbit' brings a mystique to both the garden and the mixed container. Reaching heights of 12"
(30 cm), 'Blue Hobbit'' can be used as a border plant or as a unique specimen plant within mixed containers.
'Blue Hobbit' performs in a variety of climates, but truly thrives in hot, sunny climates with fertile soils.
The world's first genetically compact Eryngium, 'Blue Hobbit' has silver blue stems that emerge from basal rosettes, before forming a globe-like flower head. 'Blue Hobbit' works well as a border plant in large masses, or as a novel specimen in the landscape.
'Blue Hobbit' is a beautiful accent plant, when combined with Melinis 'Savannah', Echinacea 'Primadonna Deep Rose' and the Lobelia 'Fan'® series in the perennial garden.

| Sowing Method: | |
4-5 seeds per plug
| Germination: | |
14-20 days at 18-24 °C. In media with very low soluble salt levels and pH: 6.0-7.5. Cover seed with vermiculite, sand or substrate after sowing. Keep soil slightly moist but not wet.
| Plug Culture: | |
From Stage II reduce the soil moisture, but the plug should not dry out and reduce the temperature to 18-20 °C. Do not let soluble salt level rise above 0,75 EC. Start fertilization at 50-75 ppm nitrogen in a well balanced formula. During Stage III and Stage IV fertilization levels can be increased to 150-200 ppm.
| Growing On: | |
6-9 weeks after sowing transplant 1 plant into a pot (12-14 cm).
| Media: | |
Use a well-drained, growing perennial substrate, pH: 6.0-7.5. Field: humus, sandy loamy soils with good drainage.
| Photoperiod / Light: | |
Long day plant. Keep light level high.
| Temperature: | |
Grow at 15-18 °C or outdoors. In winter indoors frost free at 3-5 °C or outdoors. Outdoor fleece cover needed. In spring the plants start to grow at 12-18 °C or outdoors at ambient conditions. The containers can be stored in cold storage at -1 °C and set up in intervals for forcing afterwards.
| Fertilization: | |
High fertilization levels are required.
| Cultural Hints: | |
The plant shape improves after a chilling period with respect to uniformity and better quality. Eryngium are very sensitive to wetness.
Hint
The cultural recommendations are based on results from trials conducted under Central European conditions. Different conditions in other parts of the world may lead to deviations in results achieved.
