| Sowing Method: | |
1-3 seeds per plug
| Germination: | |
4-8 days at 20-21 °C, in media with very low soluble salt levels and pH: 5.5-6.0. Requires light for germination. Cover seed lightly with vermiculite after sowing. Keep soil slightly moist but not wet. Avoid direct sunlight by shading seeds after sowing.
| Plug Culture: | |
From Stage II* reduce the soil moisture, but the plug should not dry out and reduce the temperature to 18-20 °C. Do not let soluble salt level rise above 0,75 EC. Start fertilization at 50-75 ppm nitrogen in a well balanced formula. During Stage III and Stage IV fertilization levels can be increased to 150 ppm.
| Growing On: | |
4-6 weeks after sowing transplant 1 plant per plug tray (3-4 cm) and 4 weeks later transplant 1 plant into a pot (10-15 cm). Two time transplantation will support the young plant quality. Transplant the plants not too deep into substrate. Plant cut flowers (frost free) in 25-25 x 35-40 cm space or transplant 3-4 plants into a container (25-40 l). For cut flower production cultivate in container in order to simplify culture control because of the container's mobility. Use nets to keep the stems upright.
| Media: | |
Use a well-drained, growing substrate with 15-30 % clay, 0-20 % parts (e.g. perlite, coconut fibres), 1-1,5 kg/m³ complete balanced fertilizer, 1-3 kg/m³ slow release fertilizer (3-6 months), iron-chelate, micronutrients, pH: 5.8-6.5. Field: loamy, sandy humus soils with good drainage.
Standard fertilization: 50-80 g/m² slow release fertilizer.
| Photoperiod / Light: | |
Long day plant. The long day (12-14 h) supports the flower initiation and flower development. In winter and early spring additional assimilation light is required.
| Temperature: | |
Grow at 12-18 °C during daytime and at 10-12°C during night or outdoors. In winter indoors frost free at 3-5 °C or outdoors. Outdoor fleece cover needed. In spring the plants start to grow for 7-9 weeks at 12-18 °C. Warm temperatures will decrease the cultivation time.
| Fertilization: | |
Moderate-high fertilization levels are required. Fertilize the crop weekly with 100-150 ppm nitrogen (at 3 kg/m³ slow release fertilizer in substrate), using a complete balanced fertilizer. Avoid high ammonium and high nitrogen levels. Don't fertilize after mid September. In spring fertilize 100-150 ppm nitrogen of a potassium balanced fertilizer (N: K2O-ratio: 1:1,5). Prevent magnesium deficiency by applying magnesium sulphate (0,05 %) 1-2 times and in case of iron deficiency (above pH 6.0) apply iron-chelate for 1-2 times. Field: If necessary according to analysis, improve the soil with 50-80 g/m² slow release fertilizer, applied in several portions.
| Cut Flowers: | |
Cut flower stems can be harvested, when first head flower are just fully open and 50 % of the side buds are open. Closed buds fade and do not open. Remove the bottom leaves. Vase life: 10-15 days. Cold storage is possible. In the first year harvest 10-12 stems per plant, in the second year harvest
20-30 stems. Remove spent flower stems to encourage additional flowers.
| Cultural Hints: | |
Cultivate rather dry, because the roots are very sensitive to wet substrates or soils. Planting in warm and sunny locations. Protect the plants in winter against frost.
Hint
The cultural recommendations are based on results from trials conducted under Central European conditions. Different conditions in other parts of the world may lead to deviations in results achieved.
