| Sowing Method: | |
1-3 seeds per plug
| Germination: | |
5-10 days at 22-24 °C in media with very low soluble salt levels and pH: 5.5-6.2. Before sowing treat substrate with fungicide. Cover seed lightly with vermiculite after sowing. Requires light for germination. Keep soil slightly moist but not wet.
| Plug Culture: | |
From Stage II* reduce the soil moisture and allow the substrate slightly to dry out before watering and reduce the temperature to 20 °C. Do not let soluble salt level rise above 0,75 EC. Start fertilization at 75 ppm nitrogen in a well balanced formula. During Stage III and Stage IV fertilization levels can be increased to 100-150 ppm.
| Growing On: | |
4-7 weeks after sowing transplant 1-2 plants into a packs or pot (8-10 cm) and 3-4 plants into a bigger pot/hanging basket (20-25 cm) or container (3-5 l).
| Media: | |
Use a well-drained, growing substrate with 15-30 % clay, 1-2 kg/m³ complete balanced fertilizer, 0-3 kg/m³ slow release fertilizer (3-6 months), iron-chelate, micronutrients, pH: 5.5-6.2.
| Temperature: | |
Grow at 15-18 °C. For selling it is recommended to harden the plants slowly. Coleus does not tolerate temperatures below 5 °C. Wintering indoors, in conservatory or cold greenhouse is possible.
| Fertilization: | |
Moderate fertilization levels are required. Fertilize the crop weekly with 100-150 ppm nitrogen (at 0 kg/m³ slow release fertilizer in substrate), using a complete balanced fertilizer. Avoid high ammonium and high nitrogen levels. Excessive fertilization can lead to dull coloration and decreased vigor.
The roots are sensitive to high salt levels in substrates.
| Cultural Hints: | |
Coleus can't stand bad drainage. Young leaves have to be protected against low temperatures and full sun. The leafs of the plants may get burned at high light intensity. The lower the growing temperature, the lower the water supply should be. Avoid drought stress. Leafs and flowers develop at the same time. Remove the flowers for a good plant shape.
Hint
The cultural recommendations are based on results from trials conducted under Central European conditions. Different conditions in other parts of the world may lead to deviations in results achieved.
