| Sowing Time: | |
Early January to April
| Sowing Method: | |
3-5 seeds per plug, can be sown directly into final pots
| Germination: | |
10-12 days at 18-20 °C, in media with low soluble salt levels and pH: 5.8-6.5. Cover seed lightly with vermiculite after sowing. Keep soil steadily moist but not wet.
| Plug Culture: | |
From Stage II* reduce the soil moisture, but the plug should not dry out and reduce the temperature to 15-18 °C. Do not let soluble salt level rise above 0,75 EC. Start fertilization at 50-75 ppm nitrogen in a well balanced formula. During Stage III and Stage IV fertilization levels can be increased to 150 ppm.
| Growing On: | |
4-5 weeks after the sowing transplant 1 plug into a pot (8-9 cm) or pack. 2-4 plants into bigger pot (9-12 cm).
| Media: | |
Use a well-drained, growing substrate with 20-30 % clay, 1,5 kg/m³ complete balanced fertilizer, iron-chelate, micronutrients, pH: 5.8-6.5.
| Temperature: | |
Grow at 15-17 °C. The lower the cultivation temperature the more compact is the growth of the plants. Protect outdoor with fleece cover against late frost.
| Fertilization: | |
Moderate fertilization levels are required. Fertilize the crop weekly with 100-150 ppm nitrogen, using a complete balanced fertilizer. Avoid high ammonium levels and high nitrogen levels. Prevent magnesium deficiency by applying magnesium sulphate (0,025 %) 1-2 times and in case of iron deficiency (above pH 6.0) apply iron-chelate for 1-2 times. Wetness and cold temperatures in substrate cause for iron deficiency.
| Cultural Hints: | |
Plants for the pot production can be produced outdoor at 15x30 cm. Do not produce more than 20 plants/m². In early spring assimilation light is necessary for a good crop.
Hint
The cultural recommendations are based on results from trials conducted under Central European conditions. Different conditions in other parts of the world may lead to deviations in results achieved.
