C1230 - BEGONIA SEMPERFLORENS, BEGONIA SEMPERFLORENS-HYBRIDS, WAX BEGONIA
2008/2009
'Sprint White'

Growers have learned to depend on the 'Sprint' series to provide early flowering and excellent pack fill, without sacrificing garden performance. In response to changes in the market, we are continually improving the 'Sprint' series to offer unbeatable performance from germination through all of the stages of production to the end consumer. Like the other colors in the 'Sprint' series, 'Sprint Pink' Improved and 'Sprint White' Improved offer the same large flowers over glossy, green leaves. A strong branching habit and faster pack fill offer growers more bang for their buck. Plug producers rely on the 'Sprint' series to set the highest vigor and germination standards in the industry. Northern growers have also come to appreciate the early blooming of the 'Sprint' series especially for spring production. Virtually untouched by the rigorous heat of the South, the 'Sprint' series stays compact (6-8"/15-20 cm), providing excellent packs and pots even in the Deep South. Uniformity in the pack and dependability in the garden are the reasons why growers and gardeners alike are racing to get 'Sprint' Begonias. Offered in eight colors, the 'Sprint' series is a must have for the landscape or mixed containers. In the greenhouse and in the garden 'Sprint' Begonias are a perfect match to the dark chocolate leaved 'Nightlife' series. These two well matched series make growing and timing easy for production and their superior flower size add increased appeal in the landscape. Suited for any location from hot sun to dense shade, both the 'Nightlife' and 'Sprint' series offer consistency, vigor and beauty.

  7,87 inch
Flower Size:  3 cm
  1,18 inch
Crop Time:  Plug crop: 5-6 weeks, Flowering pots (from sowing to flower): 10-12 weeks
Sell Period:  May-June
Seed Form:  Plug tested Pelleted and Raw Seed, 80.000 s/g
Seed Count:  76923 K/g
Sowing Time:  December onwards
Sowing Method:  1-2 seeds/pills per plug
Germination:  Stage I: 5-10 days at 23 °C with a relative humidity of 95 % or higher, Stage II: 10-14 days at 20-21 °C, Stages III+IV: 18-20 °C in media with very low soluble salt levels and pH: 5.5-6.2. Requires light for germination. Do not cover seeds. In winter supplemental light (50 Watt/m2) is recommended. The day length could be 12 h. Keep soil slightly moist but not wet. Avoid the substrate to dry out.
Plug Culture:  From Stage II reduce the moisture, but the plug should not dry out. Do not let soluble salt level rise above 0,5 EC. The roots are sensitive to high salt levels in substrates. Start fertilization at 50 ppm nitrogen in a well balanced formula. During Stages III+IV fertilization levels can be increased up to 100-150 ppm.
Growing On:  5-7 weeks after germination transplant 1 plant into a pot (8-9 cm) or pack. The young shoots should have 2-3 sets of true leaves.
Media:  Use a well-drained, growing substrate, pH: 5.5-6.2.
Photoperiod / Light:  Long day plant. In winter supplemental light (50 Watt/m2) is recommended for the good plant quality. The day length could be 12 h. Protect the plants in summer against high sunlight.
Temperature:  Grow at 17-19 °C. For selling harden the plants at 7-10 °C and UV light. Begonia semperflorens does not tolerate frost.
Fertilization:  Moderate fertilization levels are required. Fertilize the crop weekly with 100-150 ppm nitrogen, using a complete balanced fertilizer. High ammonium and high nitrogen levels cause big foliage. Avoid pH above 6.0, as high pH causes iron deficiency. Apply Fe-chelate if chlorosis becomes a problem. Avoid high salt levels in substrate.
Cultural Hints:  Control the pests and diseases especially in the Stages I-III regularly. Be aware of Botrytis and Phytophthora in the winter. For selling harden the plants at 7-10 °C and UV light.

* Germination Stages (from seed to finished young plant)
Stage I:Starts with the radicle breaking through the testa. The roots are touching the medium. Ends with fully developed cotyledons.
Stage II:Starts from fully developed cotyledons. Ends with the fully developed true leaf or true leaf pair.
Stage III:Starts from the fully developed true leaf or true leaf pair and ends with 80% of the young plants being marketable.
Stage IV:All young plants are ready for sale and in the process of being hardened off. This stage lasts about 7 days.

Hint
The cultural recommendations are based on results from trials conducted under Central European conditions. Different conditions in other parts of the world may lead to deviations in results achieved.
