| Sowing Time: | |
January-April for green pots; May-July for flowering in pots the following year
| Sowing Method: | |
3-5 seeds per plug
| Germination: | |
7-14 days at 3-5 °C and following
12-18 days at 17-20 °C in media with very low soluble salt levels and pH: 6.0-7.0. Requires light for germination. Cover seed lightly with vermiculite after sowing. Keep soil slightly moist but not wet. Avoid direct sunlight by shading seed after sowing. Use only fresh seeds.
| Plug Culture: | |
From Stage II* reduce the soil moisture, but the plug should not dry out and reduce the temperature to 15-17 °C. Do not let soluble salt level rise above 0,50 EC. Start fertilization at 50-75 ppm nitrogen in a well balanced formula. During Stage III and Stage IV fertilization levels can be increased to 150 ppm.
| Growing On: | |
4-6 weeks after sowing transplant 3-5 plants into a pot (8-15 cm). For flowering pot production ensure good pot size, to encourage root growth, thus improving plant quality.
| Media: | |
Use a well-drained, growing perennial substrate with 0-15 % clay, 0-15 % parts (e.g. bark, wood fibres), 1-1,5 kg/m³ complete balanced fertilizer, 1-2 kg/m³ slow release fertilizer (3-6 months), iron-chelate, micronutrients, pH: 6.0-7.0.
| Photoperiod / Light: | |
Day length neutral plants. In winter and in early spring supplemental lighting (3000-4000 lx) is recommended.
| Temperature: | |
Grow at 12-15 °C or outdoors. In winter indoors frost free at 3-5 °C or outdoors. For wintering the plants should have a proper plant size, because plants that are too small will not form enough flowers in the spring. The plants start (from CW 50 earliest) to grow at 12-15 °C. A chilling period (vernalization) is required for flower initiation.
| Fertilization: | |
Low-moderate fertilization levels are required. Fertilize the crop weekly with 100-150 ppm nitrogen (at 0 kg/m³ slow release fertilizer in substrate), using alternating a potassium balanced fertilizer and a calcium nitrate fertilizer (N: K2O-ratio: 1:1,5). Avoid high ammonium and high nitrogen levels.
Don't fertilize after mid September. In spring fertilize 100-150 ppm nitrogen of a complete balanced fertilizer. Prevent magnesium deficiency by applying magnesium sulphate (0,05 %) 1-2 times and in case of iron deficiency apply iron-chelate for 1-2 times. The roots are sensitive to high salt levels in substrates. Avoid high fertilizer concentrations, it is advisable to fertilize several times with low concentrations weekly.
| Cultural Hints: | |
P. vulgaris are poisonous. Treat the plants with fungicide against Botrytis after transplantation and before wintering. Cultivate rather dry, because the roots are sensitive to wet substrates. Take care that it is produced not too closely.
Hint
The cultural recommendations are based on results from trials conducted under Central European conditions. Different conditions in other parts of the world may lead to deviations in results achieved.
