| Germination: | |
Stage I : 2-3 days at 22-24 °C (72-75 °F). Sow in media with very low soluble salt levels and pH 6.0-6.5. Cover seed lightly with vermiculite after sowing to maintain moisture levels. Keep soil slightly moist but not wet. Light is not required for germination. At the end of stage I the radicle will have emerged and the cotyledons begin to unfurl.
| Plug Culture: | |
Stage II : 7 days; at the end of stage II the cotyledons are fully expanded. After cotyledon emergence, reduce temperature to 20-21 °C ( 68-70 °F). Reduce the soil moisture, Media should be moist to the touch but not saturated. Do not let soluble salt level rise above 0,75 EC. Start fertilization at 50-75 ppm nitrogen in a well balanced formula. Maintain light levels below 25,000 lx. Higher light levels may promote premature flowering in the plug.
Stage III : at the end of Stage III, the first true leaves should be present. Temperature may be reduced to 18-20 °C (64-68 °F), maintain moisture and light levels same as in Stage II. Excessive drying may premature flowering in the plug, repeated drying down in plug may eventually promote plug abortion. Saturated media will encourage development of a weak root system. Fertilization levels can be increased to 150 ppm nitrogen, EC 0.75 1.0.
Stage IV : at the end of Stage IV, shoot should have at least 2 sets of true leaves. If stretching occurs, reduce temperature to 17-18 °C (63-64 °F). Maintain moderately moist media. Keep fertilization at 150 ppm N. Increase light levels to 30,000 lx.
| Growing On: | |
4-5 weeks after sowing transplant 1 plant into 10 cm (4'') pots or packs. Transplant French Marigold plugs before they become root bound. Delays in transplanting may induce premature flowering.
| Media: | |
Use a well-drained, disease free, soilless medium with a pH of 6.2 -6.5; do not allow to fall below 6.0 or Iron or Manganese toxicity may result.
| Photoperiod / Light: | |
Day length neutral plants. Keep light levels from moderate to high. Short days
(9-10 h) after transplanting for 2-3 weeks improve the branching and the flower initiation will be earlier. Avoid long day conditions, because long day (above 14 h) promotes strongly the vegetative growth.
| Temperature: | |
Grow at 12-20 °C or outdoors. If temperatures are too low during plug stage, the quality of first flowers will be poor. Prefer temperatures between 18-20 °C for cultivation, because these temperatures promote the flower initiation. The plants for early selling should be hardened slowly at 10-13 °C. T. patula does not tolerate frost.
| Fertilization: | |
Moderate fertilization levels are required. Fertilize the crop weekly with 150-200 ppm nitrogen, using a complete balanced fertilizer. Avoid high ammonium and high nitrogen levels. High nitrogen levels cause leaves being too large and high ammonium levels will damage the roots. Check regularly pH value in substrate, because pH below 6.0 can result in necrotic spots on the leaves or in yellow leaves.

| Cultural Hints: | |
Avoid a high relative humidity in greenhouse. Harden the plants before selling.

* Germination Stages (from seed to finished young plant)
| Stage I: | Starts with the radicle breaking through the testa. The roots are touching the medium. Ends with fully developed cotyledons. |
| Stage II: | Starts from fully developed cotyledons. Ends with the fully developed true leaf or true leaf pair. |
| Stage III: | Starts from the fully developed true leaf or true leaf pair and ends with 80% of the young plants being marketable. |
| Stage IV: | All young plants are ready for sale and in the process of being hardened off. This stage lasts about 7 days. |
Hint
The cultural recommendations are based on results from trials conducted under Central European conditions. Different conditions in other parts of the world may lead to deviations in results achieved.
