Benary is Capturing More and More of the Growing Prennial Market

As a notable alternative for tree nurseries and bedding and border plant growers, in 2005 Benary is offering seven new perennial varieties, including two new classical perennial varieties that require vernalization to flower, and five new FastraX perennials.

With more than 350 seed-grown perennials on offer, Benary is one of the world's leading perennial breeders. Summer or spring flowering classical perennials account for the lion's share of the company's perennial items. The new Echinacea purpurea 'Primadonna', which is available in brilliant white and lavender rose, shows off its beautiful flowers in a perfectly upright flower position. Producing a high yield of 80-90 cm long flower stems, 'Primadonna White' and 'Primadonna Deep Rose' are profitable cut flower crops, as well as excellent for making great accent plants or group plantings. With good basal branching and excellent heat and drought tolerance, Benary's 'Primadonna' duo starts to flower in July and won't stop all season until the first frost arrives.

With a 90% minimum germination capacity, the delicate lavender pink Penstemon digitalis 'Mystica' ensures full trays at the production level while guaranteeing maximum profits at the wholesale and retail levels as a bronze-leaf group planting with year-round attraction. Requiring vernalization, 'Mystica' unfolds its beauty in developing multiple strong flower stems carrying 12-15 cm long clusters of large flowers. Fall brings yet another treat as the foliage of this attractive perennial turns a rich red color. At 27-31" (70-80 cm) tall in the garden, it adds stately grace to the perennial garden. Good basal branching and a sturdy upright habit make it an elegant eye catcher with versatile uses. 'Mystica' is also a great cut flower.

Along with tall perennials for group plantings, Benary's product range also includes perennial ground covers with year-round attractiveness. Take Benary's sedum assortment with the FastraX perennial Sedum selskianum 'Spirit' at the top of the list. Even in its first year, 'Spirit' is covered with a myriad of small bright yellow flowers carried above bright green glossy leaves.

The exceptional Sedum 'Voodoo' has a fascinating deep bronze leaf color that creates a beautiful contrast with the neon rose flower color. 'Voodoo' requires a cool phase to flower and is a very attractive fast crop with versatile uses and multiple sales opportunities as a foliage and architectural plant. Just like 'Voodoo' and 'Spirit', all of Benary's other sedum species such as Sedum spurium 'Coccineum', Sedum acre, and Sedum reflexum branch profusely and develops a neat compact habit in the pot.

Another dense extravagant year-round ground cover, the Geranium duo 'Vision'® comes in 'Light Pink' and 'Violet'. 'Vision'® is one of the most robust and beautiful ground covers of its kind. In warm, partially shaded locations, 'Vision'® forms a prostrate and compact cushion 10-16" (25-40 cm) high that develops masses of flowers. The pleasant leaf scent, efficient weed suppression, magnificent sea of flowers and nectar for bees all combine to make this well-branched perennial a gardener's favorite. Forming a robust ground cover, both 'Vision'® colors are an excellent choice in front of woody plants, in rock gardens and dry stone walls. The luminescent flowers of 'Vision® Light Pink' form a striking contrast to the deeply lobed dark green leaves. In the fall, 'Vision's'® striking red foliage adds additional beauty to the garden. Both of the 'Vision'® colors are available in excellent ApeX Seed quality with 30% more young plants over raw seed and higher production efficiency.
